Washer dryer or a separate dryer with washing machine?

WASHER DRYER VS WASHING MACHINE + DRYER

If you are not keen on hanging your clothes, a dryer is a must in your home. Are separate washer and dryers better OR is a single integrated washer dryer better? Let’s take a look at that in today’s video.

This is part 3 of a video series on a washing machine purchase process

So far, i have been using a washing machine where I air dry my clothes. I want that to change and start using a dryer. In this video let’s take a look at the parameters to decide whether an integrated appliance is ideal for your need or a separate washer dryer.

SHOULD I BUY A WASHER DRYER OR A SEPARATE WASHING MACHINE + DRYER?

Yes and no. If you see an integrated washer dryer, they will give you different capacity for washing and drying. If you overload more than the drying capacity and expect cupboard dry - that will not happen. However, if you load just as much as the drying capacity is - it will dry really well - almost the same as the separate dryer. I have heard however that in the integrated appliance, clothes get wrinkled a lot more than a separate dryer - if you have experience with both - please drop me a comment. I believe that happens when the drum is over capacity - but I’d like some input on that!

If you are interested in the integrated - look at the dryer capacity and determine what the best size is for your family - not the washer capacity. Here is a quick reference and I’ve made a detailed video on this here -> Linked in the description

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A WASHER DRYER TAKE?

Separate dryer and washer require double the space as the dimensions will be almost the same - around 60 cm width x 60 cm depth x 85 cm height. Dryers can be mounted on the wall - so if you have vertical space and are keen on buying a separate dryer - then this is an option. You do get clamps for the dryer, I’ve linked to those in the description. You can also mount the dryer upside down if the height is too much.

PRICE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WASHER DRYER VS DRYER?

The price of an integrated washer dryer is ⅔ the price of separate washer + dryer. For example - if I look at a 5.5kg IFB Dryer costs about 19,000 and a 7kg IFB washing machine costs 27490. Comparatively a washer + dryer of 7kg/5kg from samsung costs 37490 (IFB does not have integrated washer dryer, so using Samsung for comparison). So comparatively cheaper.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES A WASHER DRYER TAKE?

Integrated Washer dryers are known to take more time - on an average 3.5 hours for the full cycle. It can be lower based on the amount of load. In comparison, a separate washer and dryer will take about 2 hours. Most integrated washer-dryers these days have a 1 hour cycle for a really small load (about 4 tshirts equivalent) if you are in a hurry to get your clothes ready.

HOW MUCH ENERGY DOES A WASHER DRYER CONSUME?

Integrated washer dryer consumes more power than separate devices - also cos it takes longer. For the same example we discussed earlier - IFB will take 2.9 (drying) + 0.6 (washing) = 3.5 while comparatively samsung washer dryer will take 5.4 kwh - majority of which is from the dryer

WHICH IS MORE CONVENIENT - WASHER DRYER OR WASHING MACHINE + DRYER?

With integrated, you can add the clothes and forget about it till the cycle is complete. With a separate washer dryer, you have to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer. Which can be inconvenient for some people.

Like I’ve mentioned before - what’s good for one person may not be good for another - as they may have different criteria for selection. For some it may be budget, for some it may be space, some may be ok to try a new product if the specs are good, some may prefer tried and tested product. So my recommendations will be based on what I think are important - it may be different for you.

So for me - I have a space issue and I want to have utmost convenience. So those two parameters rank high for me due to which I will go with an integrated washer dryer. What about you? What is most important for you? Tell me in the comments.
