Let’s talk about Brushless Direct Current Fans or BLDC fans. These are being promoted a lot as energy saving fans - so let’s try to demystify when you should consider a BLDC fan and when not.
I ran a poll on my channel - and close to 80% of respondents said they were using the fan for 10+ years (ignoring the respondents who have new fans less than 5 years). The reason I conducted this survey was to understand typical running life of a ceiling fan - which will be used in this analysis.

Firstly - BLDC fans cost much more than a regular fan. This is because of the electronic controller. For the sake of comparison, I’m comparing a regular fan from Crompton that costs about Rs. 1500 and a BLDC fan from the same brand which costs about Rs. 3390. Yes, there are more expensive BLDC fans - but let’s work it out with this for now.
At the highest speed, the regular fan consumes about 72W in power and the BLDC fan consumes about 35W in power. Now obviously the usage of fans is different in different parts of the country - right? In places like Bangalore or cooler areas - we probably only use the fan a few months a year for a few hours and in hotter places, the fan is used more extensively. So we need to factor that in when deciding whether a BLDC fan is useful or not.
So I looked at 3 scenarios - you are using the fan 8 or 12 or 15 hours a day and using the fan 3 or 6 or 12 months in the year. As you can see, even in the least used scenario - that is using the fan for 8 hours only 3 months a year - there is significant energy savings. The savings is almost 50% because the energy consumed is about 50% lower.
But does this justify the extra cost you are paying? This is where the survey I conducted comes handy. Since 80% of people use fans for 10+ years, we have to take a look at how much time it takes to recover the extra upfront cost you are paying.
Even in the least use scenario, you are recovering it in 9 years. The recovery time is significantly better when your usage of the fan is higher. Remember - if you buy a more expensive fan, yes your recovery time will be higher but it will still be worth it, especially in scenarios where you are running it for longer hours through the year.
So yes - BLDC fans are definitely worth it for significant savings.
Some things to keep in mind:
Installation - it does not need a regular regulator as it has a remote. So there may be some wiring adjustment the electrician will need to bypass the fan regulator. And no, most brands do not provide installation assistance.
Noise - many users have reported complaints about rattling noise after a few months of usage. This can be due to a motor issue. There could also be a slight jerk noise reported at the start of the fan - which is expected. During running, it is expected to be less noisier than normal fans.
