Best Oven Toaster Grill (OTG) for home use

OK let’s talk about Oven Toaster Grills. A dedicated OTG is useful for you only if you intend to use it for baking / grilling a few times a week. Otherwise it can take up precious counter space in already crowded kitchens.

SIZE of OTG

OTGs come in various different sizes - from about 10L all the way upto 60L. For a family of 2-4 people and for home use, an OTG upto 30L is sufficient. For larger family or for professional use, you can get an OTG between 40-60L. In this video, I’ll cover the comparison of OTGs of size between 16 and 40L - which is ideal for home use and for families upto 4 people. Throughout the video - when I say lower capacity models it is less than 25L and higher capacity models in this video are 25-35L.

The other important criteria is what sized tins will fit into an OTG. While this is an important criteria, most vendors don’t publish it unfortunately. A general rule of thumb is - for a 16-20L, you can fit a circular pan of 6-9 inches in diameter, for a 20-30L one you can fit about 9-13 inches in diameter.

WATTAGE of OTG

Wattage is an important factor - that determines how much power the OTG consumes but also determines how fast and evenly your food will be baked in the OTG. Low wattage in a higher capacity OTG can give inconsistent cooking. In general - 1300W for less than 20L and 1500-1600W is good for OTGs of sizes 20-30L.

Rods help with the heating - most of the OTGs of this size have 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. Some come with an additional fan - also called convection mode - which ensures even distribution of heat - generally only the top end ones have it except for a few lower end ones.

MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SUPPORTED

Let’s talk about the maximum temperature supported. In general - most baking requires between 180-220 degree centigrade. Some dishes like sourdough require upto 250 degree centigrade. So select one based on your need. For most cases - upto 230 degrees is sufficient. You have a timer that ranges from 0- 90 min. Some of the models have a stay on mode, which will continue to maintain the temperature beyond the set timer.

ROTISSERIE IN OTG

Rotisserie is useful if you cook non-veg food. You can also use the rotisserie for some vegetarian food but not as useful as it is for non-veg food. So it can be optional for vegetarian cooking. Most of the higher capacity models have a rotisserie except for American Micronic. Most of the lower capacity models do not have a rotisserie except for the models you see on the screen.

DIGITAL OTG

Recently digital OTGs are becoming quite popular. Only 3 of the models compared have it - Philips, Usha and Wonderchef.

Having a light in the inner chamber is useful to see the progress of the food being cooked. Not all OTGs have this - all bajaj models compared don’t have this light. For the other brands like Inalsa, Havells, most of the lower capacity ones don’t have it and higher capacity ones do.

Make sure to also check the accessories that you do get with the OTG. In general, a wire rack, a baking tray (which sometimes functions as a crumb tray) is common. Some models have a special crumb tray, some models with Rotisserie also give a rotisserie spit and skewers.

PRICING AND WARRANTY

From a pricing point of view, OTGs are generally lower cost than Convection ovens or even air fryer ovens - ranging from 3K to 12K. The pricing difference indicates mainly the difference in wattage and capacity. Warranty in general is 2 years with an exception of Agaro, kent, panasonic and prestige.

BEST OVEN TOASTER GRILL (OTG) IN INDIA

So based on all of these parameters, my top recommendations are as follows:

My recommended capacity is between 25-35L for home use and family of upto 4. I have 3 recommendations for you in this size:
- If you are looking for one with a digital display, then I recommend the Philips HD6975 OTG. At a capacity of 25L and a price of about 8K, this is ideal for families of 2-3 people and hobby bakers. At 1500W and ability to support temperatures upto 230 degree centigrade, it can be used to prepare most dishes. It also includes the inner chamber light and a rotisserie.
- My next recommendation is the Inalsa MasterChef OTG. It comes at a budget pricepoint of 6.4K for a size of 30L and offers a 2 year warranty. Like the Bajaj model, this also has the capability to go upto 250 degrees centigrade with a wattage of 1600W. It includes the rotisserie and inner chamber light as well.
- At a price of about 7.5k for a size of 28L, Bajaj Majesty OTG is one of the most popular OTG ovens. It’s got one of the best wattage of 1800W with a capability for temperature to go upto 250 degrees, a convection mode for even heating, a 2 year warranty and a rotisserie option. The only challenge I see with this model is the lack of inner chamber light.
If you are looking for a small capacity between 15-25L, then I have two recommendations for you.
- My first recommendation is the Agaro Marvel OTG. At a price of about 3.5K and a capacity of 19L - it offers one of the better performances at this capacity range. It has a wattage of 1280W and a max temperature of 250 degrees centigrade. It does include rotisserie and inner chamber light. The only aspects limited in this is the 1 year warranty for the product.
- My second recommendation is the Borosil Prima OTG. At a price of about 7K, it’s on the expensive side but it offers one of the best wattage in this capacity range - of about 1600W. It also gives a 2 year warranty, a rotisserie, inner chamber light and a max temperature of 230 degree centigrade.
