Once the humidity levels start to go up within our homes, we see tell tale signs - like increase in mold on walls / cupboards / clothes, a musty smell in the house, clothes not drying, or increase in allergies. In general - a 30-60% humidity is expected to be in the comfortable range. To know the humidity levels - you can get an approximate humidity level in your city on any of the weather apps but to check the same in your home, you need a hydrometer.

Couple of things to note before you buy a dehumidifier:
If you stay in an area with MODERATELY HUMID + COOL - say upto 70% humidity and your goal is to remove moisture and reduce temperature - an AC will be preferable.
If you stay in an area that is HUMID + COOL - then a separate dehumidifier is sufficient. A dehumidifier removes moisture but does not cool the air. Infact, the ambient temperature goes up slightly - which is still OK because the ambient temperature is cool.
If you stay in an area that is both HOT + HUMID, then you may need to couple an AC with a separate dehumidifier - as the AC would not be able to dehumidify sufficiently.
If you are looking at reducing humidity only in specific areas of the house - like your cupboards / shoe racks - you can use moisture absorbants or silica gel. You also get miniature dehumidifiers if the humidity levels of these enclosed space is very high. I’ve linked to a few in the description.

Let’s now discuss how to select the best dehumidifier. The first thing to consider is the capacity - in this case, the amount of moisture it can remove from the air. If you stay in a very humid area - above 80% humidity, you need atleast a dehumidifier that removes 14-15L/day or above. If you stay in an area with medium humidity - between 50-80%, you need atleast a dehumidifier with 10-12L/day and above. The small portable ones that remove upto 500ml per day are only ideal for really small areas, like inside the closet or cupboards. Amongst the dehumidifiers compared, Sharp dehumidifier has the lowest dehumidifying capacity per day and Indian brands like Power Pye Electronics and Sujay have upto 30L per day dehumidifying capacity - which is ideal for larger rooms or areas with high humidity.
Next you have to check the room size it can cater too. Most of these dehumidifiers compared cater to 200-400 sq ft. If you have a larger room, you may need to use multiple dehumidifiers in the room. Sharp air purifier with dehumidifier 20L supports the largest room size of upto 550 sq ft.
Next key thing to consider is the tank capacity and if the dehumidifier has continuous draining of the collected water. If continuous draining is not available or if you place your dehumidifier far from the drain, then you need to select a dehumidifier with the largest tank. All dehumidifiers except the Sharp Air purifier with Dehumidifier compared have the continuous drain option and amongst the models compared - Power Pye Electronics and Sujay have the largest tank capacity. One thing to note is that the drain pipe may need to be purchased separately - especially if you need a longer pipe to go until your drain outlet let’s say in your bathroom.
All dehumidifiers compared have an auto shut off feature, which stops the dehumidification process once the water tank is full. Except for one of the Sharp dehumidifiers, you can also set a preferred humidity level. Compared to an AC, electricity consumption of dehumidifiers is between 150-300W - so a much cheaper option if you are only looking at dehumidifying without cooling the room.

Many dehumidifiers also provide an air purification option by including a HEPA filter. Some only disburse negative ions to ‘freshen’ the air. It’s not really full purification. Sharp 20L/D model is the only one that is advertised as both an air purifier and dehumidifier and performs the best air purification. In the case of Power Pye electronics, the air purification kit needs to be purchased separately.
The largest model of Power Pye Electronics dehumidifier supports adjusting the humidity levels and controlling the dehumidifier using an app, Alexa or Google Home. None of the other dehumidifiers compared have this option.
Since last year when I did the comparison, the pricing of these dehumidifiers have increased significantly. All of the dehumidifiers compared are for full rooms are upwards of 20K with the largest one I’ve compared all the way upto 38K. There are other dehumidifiers over 75k which I have not included in this comparison. From a warranty point of view, Power pye gives a 2 year warranty on their larger models, all other dehumidifier models compared come with a 1 year warranty. In general - service seems to be positive for most brands compared.

So based on all of these, I have 3 recommendations for the best dehumidifiers for you - and it remains consistent with my recommendation from last year:
Many dehumidifiers in India are from local brands. If you are looking for one with brand backing, then I recommend the Sharp 20L/Day air purifier with dehumidifier. At a price of about 35K, it offers the best air purification as well with a HEPA 14 filter. It has a 4.6L tank but does not have continuous draining capacity. 4.6L is sufficient for almost a full night sleep in areas of high humidity.
If you are looking at a dedicated dehumidifier for a medium - large sized room, I recommend the Power Pye Electronics dehumidifiers. They come with a 20 / 30 L per day dehumidifying capacity. Both the models have large tank sizes, the auto drain function, support large rooms of upto 450 sq ft. The larger 30L/day model also comes with smart app support and can be controlled using App / Alexa or google home. But Air purification kit comes at an extra cost. Power Pye Electronics also offers the best warranty of 2 years.
For smaller rooms, I recommend the Origin 13L/Day dehumidifier. It has a water tank of 2.3 liters with an auto drain capability. It has a dehumidification capacity of 13L / day and has an ionization function to freshen up the air.
