Air Fryer vs Convection Oven - Demo and Review

I’ve indicated a lot of times before on this channel that if you already own a convection oven or a regular oven, an air fryer is not absolutely necessary. But if you don’t, you can consider getting an air fryer or air fryer oven if that’s your main use case.

So today let’s do a demo of that and see the pros and cons of each.

I’m going to use potato smiles as a reference for this exercise. We will compare the quantity, time taken and finish using each of these products.

  1. Space: The amount of space taken by an air fryer is lesser - about 2/3rd of the microwave convection oven that I have. If I have both, it takes up a significant amount of space.

  2. Quantity: If you want good coloring of the snacks, it is recommended not to pile the products on top of each other. In the air fryer, I can place only about 10 McCain smiles while in the microwave convection I can place about YY smiles. Almost ZZ times more than the air fryer

  3. Oil used: Oil used will be almost equivalent in both. You can spray or brush oil over the smiles. You can also cook without the oil if you choose it that way.

  4. Time taken: As per the packaging, the air fryer requires about 16 minutes to cook the smiles. If you need it to crisp it more, keep it in for 1-2 more minutes. In the microwave convection oven, the preset mode takes about 22 minutes. Sometimes, you will see that this time is not enough and you will need to keep it for longer. This is one of the biggest differences. If you tend to ‘fry’ often, then the air fryer may be a better option from a power consumption point of view as well. If it is only occasional, then you can continue with your oven.

  5. Finish of the products: Let’s see how it turns out. Both turn out similar taste wise. But the coloring and crispness in the air fryer is slightly better than the slim fry capability in the convection microwave.

So in summary - like I have mentioned before - if you tend to fry often, then getting a dedicated appliance to air fry makes sense. Else you can continue with your existing concection or otg oven.

Hope this gives you a good idea on whether you need a separate air fryer or you can continue to use your existing oven (either OTG or Convection) or you need both.
